Robert Grosvenor, 1st Marquess of Westminster [1767-1845]. \nA large and exceptional Victorian Soup Ladle with shell bowl, London 1841, by Mortimer and Hunt, successors to Storr and Mortimer. The handle terminal is formed as the accolé arms of the 1st Marquess with supporters and coronet. In March 1841, the Marquess was made a Knight of the Garter and the arms incorporate the Garter motto. The ladle formed part of a very large order from Mortimer and Hunt in that year including plates, serving dishes, with dish covers, tureens, entrée dishes and warmers, all of the pieces ornamented with elements of the Marquess's arms. This large order supplemented earlier acquisitions of plate after he succeeded his father as Earl of Westminster in 1802. After that date he began rebuilding Eaton Hall then, in 1805, purchased Grosvenor House. He was created a Marquess in 1831. \nA part of the Marquess's plate was sold by Sotheby's London on the 2nd July 1959: 'The Property of the Most Noble Hugh Richard Arthur, Duke of Westminster, sold by order of the Executors.'
