A Set of Six Victorian silver gadroon-edge Dinner Plates, London 1868, by Robert Garrard. Each plate stamped 'Garrards Panton Street London' and engraved with a coat-of-arms, supporters and motto for Thomas George Baring, 2nd Baron Northbrook, 1826-1904, who succeeded his father in 1866, and who was created 1st Earl Northbrook in 1876. In 1868, when these plates were made, Baring was appointed Under-Secretary of State for War by Gladstone. Baring's wife had died the previous year and he remained a widower for the rest of his life. Good. Some surface scratching to the wells of the plates from use.
