A silver Dish by Cecil Walker.

[Died 1983]. \nA small silver Dish with applied cast scroll handles, London 1935, engraved underneath with the retailers' name 'Goldsmiths' and Silversmiths' Company Ltd., 112, Regent Street, London W1.' \nCecil Walker, who appears to have first registered his mark in 1927, designed for the firms of Mappin and Webb and the Goldsmiths' and Silversmiths' Company. His work is in the arts and crafts' tradition but always of good gauge and fine quality. His pieces appeared in many of the exhibitions and displays of 'contemporary silver' in the period from the late 1920's to 1950 in Britain. He designed a 457oz. Cup and cover, and two Rosewater dishes weighing 258 ozs., with enamelling by H. de Koningh, as part of the Viceroy's plate in New Delhi, given by the Goldsmiths' Company in London, which was exhibited in London in 1930. [see The Times, May 3rd, 1930]. \nA deeper dish, of similar design, by Cecil Walker, was illustrated in the 'London Illustrated News', 9th July 1938, in an article "The Craft of the Modern British Silversmith in Its Finest Manifestations". \nAccording to an exhibition catalogue published by the Goldsmiths' Company in 1953, Cecil Walker moved from silversmithing into the optical industry. The latest pieces noted with his mark are for the assay year 1938. A later publication by the Goldsmiths' Company gives his death as in 1983. Condition: \n
