An unmarked silver Medal from the Edinburgh Royal Society for John Rutherford in 1804. \n \nWalter Scott, wrote of Dr. Rutherford [senior] : 'He was one of those pupils of Boerhaave to whom the school of medicine in our northern metropolis owes its rise, and a man distinguished for professional talent, for lively wit, and for literary acquirements.' Walter Scott's mother, Anne, was daughter of Dr. John Rutherford from his first marriage. John Rutherford, the son of Dr. Rutherford  [senior] from his second marriage [to Anne Mackay], was elected to the Royal Society on the 25th June 1804. His brother, Daniel, was also a physician.
