A Victorian novelty silver Table Lighter and Match holder for Sir Arthur Scott.

A Victorian novelty silver and wood Table Lighter, with Vesta tray and Spill Holder, formed as a ragged boy selling matches standing beside a Post Box, London 1877, by James Barclay Hennell. The hinged lid of the Post Box is engraved with an inscription 'Arthur Scott From Yarborough, September 1881.' The underside of the rim of the post box lid is also engraved with the retailer's name ' W. Thornhill & Co., 144 New Bond St.' The paving stone base is engraved with a design registration lozenge and the whole silver scene is set upon a painted ebonised wooden plinth. \n \nThe head of the boy removes to allow the lighter to be filled and the wick holder is the arm of the boy, holding a match box. The post box is a spill holder. \n \nThe ’Birmingham Daily Post’ of September 7th 1881, gave extensive coverage of the coming of age party given for Sir Arthur Douglas Scott of Great Barr Hall near Birmingham and Hartington Hall, Derbyshire. The Earl of Yarborough is not listed amongst the guests but he was evidently amongst Scott’s circle of friends. Yarborough had himself come of age in 1881. Condition: \n
