An unusual Victorian silver Cigarette case with silver-gilt interior and spring hinge, London 1884, by Walter Thornhill: the exterior engraved with a chess board, and six chess pieces at play with the inscription 'White to play and mate in 3 moves.' The engraved pieces filled with enamel. The interior of the case engraved: 'White 1. Kt. to Kgs 2nd 2. Qn. to Bs. Square 3. Mates accordingly. Black. 1. Kt. to Qns 7th 2. any move.' Condition: \n
Good with minor marking to the interior gilding and some wear to the gilding in one corner. Some chipping to the enamel of the chess pieces engraved on the board.
