A Victorian silver-gilt Badge for the Chairman of the City of London Lord Mayor'

A Victorian silver-gilt Badge for the Chairman of the City of London Lord Mayor's Committee, London 1842, John MacGregor. The badge is engraved: 'Presented by the Right Honourable Jno. Humphery M.P. Lord Mayor, John K. Hooper Esq. Aldn. & Jeremiah G. Pilcher Esq. Sheriffs: 1842-3 to W. Green Esq. Deputy & Chairman of the Lord Mayor & Sheriffs Committee.' The inscription is arranged within a triangle of armorials belonging to the donors of the badge and the badge is also engraved on the belt hook with the arms of the City of London beneath a Deputy's hat. The badge is housed in its original retailer's case, with label: 'J. MacGregor, Manufacturing Jeweller, No. 30 Charterhouse Square.' \n \nI am indebted to the excellent website 925-1000.com for the following details about John MacGregor: \n \n'He was born in Scotland around 1791. \nHe entered three maker’s marks at Goldsmiths Hall in 1817-18 as a goldworker at 14 Charterhouse Street. \nChristening records for five children of John and Ann Macgregor at St James, Clerkenwell 1818-28 show their father as a jeweller from Charterhouse Street. \nThe 1841 UK Census for Charterhouse Square shows him as a wholesale jeweller aged 50 years. \nIn 1851 he was recorded as a jeweller at 30 Charterhouse Square aged 58 years. \nIn 1861 he is recorded as widowed, a manufacturing jeweller and living at The Grove, Heston aged 70 years. \nHis death record has not been traced.' \n \n  Condition: \n
