A Victorian silver Snuffbox presented to an old Servant.

A Victorian silver Snuffbox, Birmingham 1844/5 by Nathaniel Mills, the exterior with foliate engraving leaving a plain panel on the lid which is engraved with a presentation inscription 'From Lieut Wm. Seymour Scroggs 5th Fusrs. To Joseph Banting April 1845.' The interior of the box richly gilt. \n \nWilliam Seymour Scroggs was born in 1817, to Sydney Edward Scroggs of Standen, Chute, Wiltshire and his wife, Sibyll Jane [Dansey]. He joined the 5th Foot [Northumberland Fusiliers] in 1835. He retired from the regiment as a Captain. His father, who was born in Chute in 1765, inherited the property from his uncle, Philip Pulse. \n \nJoseph Banting, born in 1783, in Andover, was a long-time servant of Sydney Scroggs and it seems certain that this box was given to Banting shortly after the death of Sydney Scroggs when Seymour, as the eldest son, inherited the property.
