Elizabeth Kirkwood. \n \nA silver-mounted Coconut Bowl and Matching Spoon, Edinburgh 1951. \nElizabeth Kirkwood exhibited 'two good enamels, imitations of primitive work' at the Royal Academy in 1910. With Phoebe Traquair, she designed new stall plates for the knights in the Thistle Chapel in St. Giles' Cathedral. One panel shows St. Michael casting out Satan. Kirkwood was the daughter of Henry Bruce Kirkwood, a partner in R & H B Kirkwood, goldsmiths, jewellers, of Edinburgh. She followed her father into the family business and became a working jeweller and silversmith. She exhibited prolifically with the Scottish Society of Women Artists and the Glasgow Society of Lady Artists. A family friend, recalls ‘Betty’ as “a striking woman beautifully dressed in jewel colors”; perhaps her taste in clothes influenced her decision to work with enamels.' Condition: \n
